Firefighting settings are complex and contain various hazardous substances. Firefighters are routinely exposed to chemical substances known to cause cancer. Firefighters can come into contact with chemicals by breathing them in, getting them on their skin or in their eyes, or by ingesting them.
Training that increases cancer awareness and physical well-being may encourage firefighters to adopt work practices that lower their exposures to cancer-causing substances. It can also help promote healthier lifestyles that may also reduce their cancer risk and increase the use of cancer screening tools.
This is why we chose to partner with the Wellness House of Annapolis, whose mission it is to provide support, education, and services to help individuals and families who have been touched by cancer recover their health and well-being in a home-like environment.
Whether we are attending fundraising events, selling tee shirts to raise funds for the House, volunteering at their summer camp for children whose families are experiencing cancer, or simply swinging by the house to share joy, we are thrilled to support the tremendous local organization. And remember – the key to fighting cancer is early detection!
